Bicycle Routes Around Hindeloopen
From our park, you can hop on a bike and explore the unique landscape of the Frisian Lakes. The area around Hindeloopen is known for its sweeping views, historic IJsselmeer coastline, and picturesque Eleven Cities towns. Thanks to the extensive network of cycling junctions, you can easily plan your own route, but there are a few iconic routes you absolutely shouldn’t miss during your stay.
The Ferry Loop via Gaastmeer and Nijhuizum
📍 Distance: approx. 22 km
One of the most popular routes in the region takes you through the idyllic countryside surrounding the Frisian lakes. Cycle from the quaint village of Nijhuizum along the rustic Gronspaed toward the water sports village of Gaastmeer.
Here, you’ll cross the waters of De Grons on the authentic bicycle ferry “Droech oer de feart.” This connecting waterway links famous lakes such as the Oudegaaster Brekken, the Zandmeer, the Grote Gaastmeer, and the Heegermeer. From the other side, follow the bike path through the vast polders toward historic Workum, or continue along the bike paths that wind along the shores.
The IJsselmeer Coast & Southwest Friesland National Landscape

For anyone who loves fresh sea air and rugged nature, a bike ride along the IJsselmeer dike is an absolute must. Bird sanctuaries outside the dike, green dikes, and vast reed beds alternate along this approximately 28-kilometer route. Along the way, you’ll pass several bird-watching huts where you can spot rare waterbirds. Combine this route with a stop at the cozy beach pavilions or kitesurfing spots along the coast.
From City to City
Hindeloopen – Workum – Stavoren (approx. 35 km)
Want to soak up the rich history of Southwest Friesland? This varied loop takes you past three iconic Frisian Eleven Cities:
Take a stroll with your bike in hand through the narrow alleys of Hindeloopen and across its quaint little wooden bridges. Visit the First Frisian Skating Museum with its rich history of the Eleven Cities Race, and check out the unique 11fountains near the old harbor.
Cycle along the dike to Workum and stop at De Merk, the impressive market square lined with historic buildings. Culture lovers shouldn’t miss the famous Jopie Huisman Museum and the historic shipyard “De Hoop.”
Continue along the route toward Friesland’s oldest town. Admire the statue of the Lady of Stavoren at the old inner harbor and enjoy the view of the IJsselmeer from the quay. A scenic 10-kilometer route along the dike will take you right back to our park.
